1. e4 d5

  1. Before the first move

The Scandinavian Defense is a direct and provocative challenge to White's center from the very first move. By immediately attacking the e4-pawn, you force White to make a decision and often lead the game into unique, open positions where Black can develop rapidly and create early pressure.

  2. 1. e4White

White plays e4, the most common opening move, aiming for a strong presence in the center and quick development. You must now decide how to respond to this central claim. While 1...e5 is the traditional choice, and the Sicilian Defense with 1...c5 is a sharp alternative, the Scandinavian offers a more immediate confrontation.

  3. 1... d5Black · your move

Push your pawn to d5. You are immediately challenging White's e4-pawn and forcing a central liquidation. This move defines the Scandinavian Defense, aiming to open lines for your pieces and avoid the cramped positions often found in other responses like the French or Caro-Kann.

Other paths here: f6 (Barnes Defense) · g5 (Borg Defense) · h6 (Carr Defense) · f5 (Duras Gambit)

  4. Where you stand

The game usually continues with White capturing the d5 pawn. Black will then either recapture with the queen or play Nf6 to regain the pawn later. White will try to harass the queen or build a strong center, while Black focuses on pressure against d4 and rapid piece activity. Both sides must be ready for an open, tactical battle.

    • e4-d5 White captures the d5 pawn to simplify the center
    • d8-d5 Black recaptures with the queen to stay active
    • g8-f6 Black develops the knight to pressure d5 and e4
    • b1-c3 White develops the knight to harass the black queen
