Before the first move
The Benko Gambit is a sharp, strategic sacrifice where Black offers a pawn to gain long-term pressure on the queenside. In the Sosonko Variation, White declines the bait by pushing the a-pawn, aiming to lock the structure and stifle Black's typical piece activity before the game truly opens up.
1. d4White
White starts with d4, the most common alternative to e4. This move establishes a firm grip on the center and prepares a solid structural foundation. Black has many ways to respond, with Nf6 being the most flexible and popular choice.
1... Nf6Black · your move
Develop your knight to f6. This is the most flexible response to d4, preventing White from immediately occupying the center with e4 and keeping your options open for several different defensive setups.

2. c4White
White plays c4, the most ambitious and common follow-up. By placing a second pawn in the center, White prepares to gain more space. Other options like the London System or the Tartakower Attack with g3 lead to very different pawn structures.
Other paths here: f4 (Canard Opening) · g4 (Indian Defense: Gibbins-Weidenhagen Gambit) · e4 (Indian Defense: Omega Gambit) · d5 (Indian Defense: Pawn Push Variation)
2... c5Black · your move
Strike at the center with c5. By challenging the d4 pawn immediately, you invite White to push forward, which creates the hypermodern Benoni structure where you will look to undermine the white center from the flanks.
Other paths here: g5 (Indian Defense: Medusa Gambit) · b5 (Indian Defense: Pyrenees Gambit) · a6 (Indian: 2.c4 a6) · Nc6 (Mexican Defense)
3. d5White
White plays d5, accepting the challenge and locking the center. This is the most principled response, though White can also play Nf3 to keep the tension or e3 to support the center. The game now pivots into Benoni territory.

3... b5Black · your move
Sacrifice your pawn on b5 to initiate the Benko Gambit. This move seeks to trade your wing pawn for White's c-pawn, opening lines for your rooks and bishop to pressure White's queenside for the rest of the game.
Other paths here: e5 (Benoni Defense: Czech Benoni Defense) · d6 (Benoni Defense: Hromádka System) · a6 (Benoni: 3.d5 a6) · g6 (Benoni: 3.d5 g6)
4. a4White
White plays a4, declining the sacrifice in a very specific way. By pressuring b5 immediately, White avoids the main lines like the King's Indian Attack or the Bishop Attack with Bg5, hoping to keep the queenside closed and under control.
Other paths here: Bg5 (Benko Gambit Declined: Bishop Attack) · e4 (Benko Gambit Declined: Hjørring Countergambit) · Nf3 (Benko Gambit Declined: Main Line) · f3 (Benko Gambit Declined: Pseudo-Sämisch)
Where you stand
The position is strategically tense. White aims to keep the queenside locked to neutralize Black's typical Benko pressure, while Black will try to use the Qa5 check or b4 push to create imbalances. Both sides must carefully manage the pawn tension on the queenside while finishing their development.
- d8-a5 Develop queen with check to disrupt White
- b5-b4 Push to b4 to lock the queenside
- c1-d2 Block the queen check and develop
- g1-f3 Develop knight to control the center
