Before the first move
The Czech Benoni is a rock-solid, closed system where Black challenges the center immediately with c5 and e5. White gains a space advantage with a wedge on d5, while Black aims to create an unbreakable fortress. Both sides must prepare for a long, strategic maneuvering battle behind these fixed pawn chains.
1. d4White
White plays d4, the most common way to start a positional game. By occupying the center, White prepares to develop their pieces behind a solid pawn. Black has many ways to respond, including the flexible Nf6, the solid d5, or the more provocative c5 that we will see next.
1... c5Black · your move
Strike at the center immediately by moving your pawn to c5. You are challenging the d4 pawn right away and inviting White to either capture, defend, or push past. This is the hallmark of the Benoni, aiming for dynamic, unbalanced positions.

2. d5White
White plays d5, the most ambitious and common response, gaining space and locking the center. White could also choose to capture with dxc5 or defend with e3 or c3, but pushing forward is the most principled way to try and prove that Black's early challenge was premature.

2... e5Black · your move
Move your pawn to e5 to lock the center and establish your defensive wall. This move prevents White from playing e4 easily and secures your share of the middle. You are preparing to develop your kingside and wait for the right moment to strike back.

Where you stand
The center is now completely locked, favoring a slow, positional game. White will typically expand on the queenside or try to prepare an f4 break, while Black will focus on kingside defense and maneuvering the knights to d6 or f6. Both sides must be careful not to create weaknesses in their pawn chains while repositioning their pieces for the middle game.
- e2-e4 Support the d5 wedge and control space
- g8-f6 Develop the knight and control e4
- b1-c3 Develop the knight to defend e4
- d7-d6 Solidify the d-pawn and free the bishop
