Before the first move
The Tennison Gambit is a tricky, provocative opening where White offers an early pawn to lure Black into a tactical minefield. While White seeks rapid development and kingside pressure, Black aims to consolidate the extra material and blunt the attack. You must decide whether to hold the pawn or return it for a solid position.
1. Nf3White
White plays Nf3, the Zukertort Opening. This is a highly flexible move that avoids committing a central pawn immediately while preparing to control d4. You have many ways to respond, including the solid d5, the flexible Nf6, or even the aggressive f5 Dutch Variation.
1... d5Black · your move
Push your pawn to d5. By claiming the center immediately, you challenge White's knight and set a firm stake in the middle of the board. This move prepares to develop your light-squared bishop and creates a solid foundation for your game.
Other paths here: f6 (Zukertort Opening: Arctic Defense) · h6 (Zukertort Opening: Basman Defense) · Nc6 (Zukertort Opening: Black Mustang Defense) · f5 (Zukertort Opening: Dutch Variation)
2. e4White
White plays e4, initiating the Tennison Gambit. Instead of the typical d4 or c4, White suddenly transforms the game into a gambit. You could decline with e6 or c6, but taking the pawn is the most critical test of White's provocative strategy.

2... dxe4Black · your move
Capture the pawn on e4. By accepting the gambit, you win a pawn and force White to prove they have enough compensation. You must be prepared for White to jump their knight to g5, attacking your new pawn and trying to disrupt your kingside.
Where you stand
Black has won a pawn but must now navigate White's upcoming pressure, typically starting with Ng5. White will try to recover the pawn or induce weaknesses around the f7 square. Both sides must balance development with the immediate tactical threats surrounding the e4 pawn and the kingside.
- f3-g5 Attack the e4 pawn and f7 square
- g8-f6 Defend e4 and develop the kingside
- e7-e5 Challenge the center and open lines
- f1-c4 Target the weak f7 pawn directly
