1. Nf3

  1. Before the first move

The Zukertort Opening, starting with 1. Nf3, is a flexible and hypermodern approach. Instead of rushing to occupy the center with pawns, you control it with pieces and keep your options open for different setups. This often leads to strategic battles where you wait to see how the opponent reacts before committing your central pawns.

  2. 1. Nf3White · your move

Develop your knight to f3 to exert immediate control over the d4 and e5 squares. This move prevents Black from playing an early e5 and prepares for a quick kingside castle while keeping your central pawn structure flexible. It is the hallmark of the Reti and Zukertort systems.

  3. Where you stand

The game remains highly fluid after this first move. White will likely follow up with c4, g3, or d4 depending on Black's response. Black usually chooses between matching the flexibility with Nf6 or staking a claim in the center with d5. Both sides should focus on harmonious development and controlling the central squares before launching any direct attacks.

    • f3-e5 The knight controls the critical e5 square
    • c2-c4 White often strikes with the c-pawn later
    • g2-g3 Preparing to fianchetto the bishop on g2
    • d7-d5 Black challenges the center with the d-pawn
    • g8-f6 Black develops the knight to mirror White's setup
