  1. Before the first move

The Bird Opening begins with an aggressive flank advance, but the Lasker Gambit immediately challenges White's resolve. By offering a central pawn, Black tries to exploit the slight weakening of the kingside. You must decide whether to hold the extra material or return it for rapid development.

  2. 1. f4White · your move

Push your pawn to f4. This move claims space on the kingside and controls the e5-square, mirroring the Dutch Defense but with the advantage of being a tempo ahead. You're preparing to develop your pieces behind this solid wall while eyeing a future attack.

  3. 1... e5Black

Black replies e5, initiating the From Gambit. This is the most testing response to the Bird. Other popular choices include the solid Nf6 or the symmetrical c5. By offering the pawn, Black hopes to gain a lead in development and exploit the newly opened f-file.

Other paths here: Nf6 (Bird Opening) · g5 (Bird Opening: Hobbs Gambit) · Nh6 (Bird Opening: Horsefly Defense) · b5 (Bird Opening: Myers Defense)

  4. 2. fxe5White · your move

Capture the pawn on e5. You must accept the challenge to justify your first move. While this opens your king's position slightly, you are now a full pawn up and force Black to prove they have enough compensation for the material deficit.

Other paths here: Nc3 (Bird Opening: From's Gambit, Bahr Gambit) · g4 (Bird's Opening, From's Gambit/Fool's Mate) · d4 (Bird Opening: Siegener Gambit)

  5. 2... f6Black

Black plays f6, the Lasker Gambit. This is even more aggressive than the main line From Gambit with d6. Black is willing to sacrifice further material to prevent White from stabilizing. Other options here include Nc6 or the Platz Gambit with Ne7, both aiming for rapid piece play.

Other paths here: Ne7 (Bird Opening: Platz Gambit) · Nc6 (Bird Opening: Schlechter Gambit) · d6 (Bird: From Gambit, 2...d6)

  6. Where you stand

The position is highly volatile. White is a pawn up but must develop carefully to avoid being overrun by Black's active pieces. Black has clear compensation through open lines and should focus on rapid development. Both sides must be wary of tactical shots around the exposed kingside diagonals.

    • e5-f6 Eliminate the challenger to simplify the center
    • e2-e4 Establish a central presence and free the bishop
    • b8-c6 Bring the knight out to pressure e5
    • f8-c5 Place the bishop on an active diagonal
