Before the first move
The Nimzo-Larsen Attack is a hypermodern opening where White concedes the center early to strike from the flanks. By pushing the b-pawn, you prepare to fianchetto your queen's bishop, creating long-range pressure across the long diagonal. Black must decide whether to occupy the center or mirror White's setup.
1. b3White · your move
Push your pawn to b3. This prepares to develop your bishop to the b2-square, where it will exert immense pressure on the center and Black's kingside. You are avoiding the most common theoretical battles of 1. e4 or 1. d4, forcing Black to find their own way in a less forcing position.
Where you stand
The game will evolve based on Black's central choice. If Black plays e5, White will immediately challenge it with Bb2 and possibly f4. If Black plays d5, White often aims for a setup with Bb2, e3, and Bb5. Both sides should focus on piece harmony rather than immediate tactical skirmishes in these early stages.
- c1-b2 Fianchetto the bishop to control the long diagonal
- e7-e5 Occupy the center and challenge the bishop
- g1-f3 Develop the knight to control central squares
- b8-c6 Develop the knight to defend the e5-pawn
